What the $99 covers

A full synthetic oil change at 2 and 1/2 Mechanics starts at $99, before tax. The old oil is drained hot, the drain plug gets a new washer where your car uses one, and a new filter goes on. The engine is filled with the grade your manufacturer calls for, run, then checked on the dipstick again once the filter has filled.

The maintenance reminder on the dash gets reset before the car leaves. "From $99" covers most cars. A V8 pickup that holds eight or more litres, or a European car that needs an oil with a specific approval, costs more, and you hear that number before anything is drained.

Why full synthetic suits Ottawa

The worst moment of an engine’s day is the cold start. At minus 25 in a driveway in Orléans or Vanier, conventional oil thickens and takes longer to reach the top of the engine. Synthetic flows sooner at low temperatures, and the "0W" in a grade like 0W20 is the rating for how well it pumps when cold.

Many newer engines are designed around synthetic anyway. Small turbocharged engines with direct injection run hot and are sensitive to oil quality, and the owner’s manual often lists an approval code alongside the grade. We match the grade on the oil filler cap or in the manual, not whatever happens to be on the shelf.

Short trips count as severe driving

Most owner’s manuals print two schedules, and the severe one fits a lot of Ottawa driving better than people expect. A ten minute run to the St. Laurent Centre in January never brings the oil fully up to temperature. Water from combustion and a little unburnt fuel collect in the oil instead of boiling off.

The old habit of changing oil every 5,000 km came from conventional oils and older engines. Many cars now go further between changes, and the oil life monitor works out the interval from engine temperature, revolutions and trip length. It cannot actually see the oil, though, so a car that leaks or burns a little still needs the level checked between visits.

You can sometimes see condensation as a creamy residue under the oil filler cap after a cold spell. A bit of it in winter is normal. If most of your driving is short hops, change the oil on the shorter interval, or earlier than the oil life monitor suggests if the car also idles a lot with a remote starter.

The red oil light is not a reminder

There are usually two different oil warnings on the dash. An orange wrench or a message such as "oil change due" is a service reminder. The red oil can is an oil pressure warning, and it means the engine is not getting enough oil right now. If the red oil light comes on while driving, pull over and shut the engine off.

Check the dipstick once the car has sat for a few minutes. If you are topping up a litre between changes regularly, the engine is either leaking or burning oil, and that is worth tracking down before it gets worse. Our engine repair page explains the usual sources.

While it is up on the lift

An oil change is one of the few times the car is in the air, so it is worth looking around. While the oil drains, we look at what is visible from underneath:

  • Oil leaks at the oil pan, filter housing and valve cover.
  • Brake lines, hoses and how much pad is left where it can be seen.
  • Torn CV axle boots and leaking shocks or struts.
  • Exhaust hangers, heat shields and rust on the subframe.
  • Tire wear patterns and any bulges from pothole hits.

If something needs attention you get told what it is, and nothing is added to the bill unless you agree to it. If the brakes look close, our brake repair page covers what the work involves. Coolant, transmission and differential fluid are separate jobs, listed under fluid services.

Questions

How much is a synthetic oil change in Ottawa?

At 2 and 1/2 Mechanics a full synthetic oil change starts at $99 before tax. Engines that hold a lot of oil or need a specific approved oil can cost more, and you are told the price before the work starts. Booking online works at any hour of the day.

How often should I change synthetic oil in a Canadian winter?

Follow your owner's manual, and if your driving is mostly short trips in the cold, use the severe service interval rather than the normal one. Short winter trips never let the engine warm up fully, so moisture and fuel collect in the oil. Many newer cars have an oil life monitor that already accounts for some of this.

Can I switch from conventional oil to synthetic?

Yes, on almost any engine, and you can switch back too. Synthetic does not cause leaks, although on an older engine it can show up a seal that was already worn. The one rule is to use the grade and approval listed in your owner's manual.

What does the red oil light on my dashboard mean?

The red oil can means oil pressure is too low, not that a change is due. Pull over and turn the engine off, then check the dipstick once it has sat a few minutes. Driving with no oil pressure can destroy an engine in a very short distance.

Does a full synthetic oil change include a new filter?

Yes, the filter is replaced at every oil change. An old filter holds dirty oil and partly blocked media, so putting fresh oil through it wastes most of the benefit. Cars with a cartridge style filter get a new cartridge and the housing seal as well.
