What the $180 brake change covers

The booking page lists a brake change from $180, before tax, and the honest word in that sentence is "from". That figure is where the price starts. Parts are quoted once the wheels are off and we can see what your car needs, because two cars of the same model can come in needing very different work after a few Ottawa winters.

What usually pushes the price up:

  • Rotors that are too thin, rusted across the face or warped enough to pulse.
  • A caliper with a seized piston or slide pin.
  • Rear brakes with an electronic parking brake, which need a scan tool to open the caliper.
  • Drum brakes at the back, with shoes, springs and adjusters.
  • Larger pickups and SUVs with heavier parts.

How brakes tell you something is wrong

Most drivers notice brake trouble by sound or feel well before a warning light comes on. Here is what each sign tends to point at:

  • A thin squeal while driving that stops when you brake is usually the wear tab on the pad touching the rotor.
  • A deep grinding under braking means the lining is gone and steel is on steel.
  • A pedal that pulses, or a steering wheel that shakes when slowing from highway speed, points at the rotors.
  • A car that pulls to one side, or one wheel that smells hot after a drive, suggests a caliper sticking.
  • A pedal that is soft, low or slowly sinking at a light is a hydraulic problem. A sinking pedal means park the car and have it looked at before driving it again.

The morning scrape that goes away

A lot of calls start with grinding first thing in the morning. Bare cast iron rotors grow a film of surface rust overnight, especially after rain or a car wash, and the first few stops wipe it off. That is normal.

Cars that sit for weeks get worse versions of this. The part of the rotor the pads cannot reach builds a rust ridge, and on older rotors rust can work into the cooling fins between the two faces. A second car parked all winter often needs rotors in spring for that reason, even with plenty of pad left.

Rear brakes, drums and parking brakes

Plenty of smaller cars and pickups still use drum brakes at the back. Inside are shoes, return springs and a self adjuster, and in a salt climate the adjuster tends to seize so the shoes drift away from the drum. The result is a pedal that travels further before the brakes bite, and a parking brake handle that pulls up a little higher every month.

Parking brake cables run under the car where slush collects. Water gets into the sheath, freezes overnight and holds the brake on. On cars with an electronic parking brake, the motor sits on the rear caliper and the pads can only be changed with the system put into service mode.

ABS, traction control and the brake booster

The ABS and traction lights usually point at a wheel speed sensor, a rusted tone ring on the axle or a broken wire near the hub. Your ordinary brakes still work, but the car loses the antilock function, which is the part you need most on ice.

A hard pedal that needs a lot of leg, especially just after starting, points at the vacuum brake booster or its check valve. That gets tested before anyone suggests replacing it.

You see the old parts

When your old pads and rotors come off, they are set aside for you. We show you the lining that was left, where the rotor was too thin, and the slide pin that was seized. You decide on the work after seeing the parts and the price, not before. Salim has always run the shop that way.

Booking brakes with other work

If your seasonal tire change is coming up, book the brakes for the same visit so the wheels only come off once. A clunk from the same corner as a worn pad can be a suspension and steering problem, so that gets a look too. Brake fluid that has gone dark and wet can be changed as part of our fluid services.

Questions

How much is a brake job in Ottawa?

At 2 and 1/2 Mechanics a brake change starts at $180 before tax, depending on the vehicle. The total moves with the parts your car actually needs, such as rotors, a seized caliper or rear drums. You get the full price before any work starts.

Why do my brakes grind in the morning and then stop?

Overnight moisture, rain or a car wash leaves a thin layer of rust on bare rotors. The first few stops scrape it off, which makes a grinding or scraping noise. If it is gone after a few stops it is normal, but a grind that stays all day points at worn pads.

Is it safe to drive with the ABS light on?

Your normal brakes still work with the ABS light on, but the antilock function does not, so the wheels can lock in a hard stop on ice. The usual cause is a wheel speed sensor or its wiring. If the red brake warning light is on as well, have it checked before driving further.

How long do brake pads last in Ottawa?

It depends far more on how and where you drive than on the calendar. Long highway runs on the 417 are easy on pads, while stop and go traffic and short city trips wear them faster. Salt also shortens pad life by seizing the hardware the pads slide on.

Why is my parking brake stuck in the winter?

Water gets inside the parking brake cable sheath, then freezes overnight and holds the brake on. The fix is a new cable or freeing the mechanism at the wheel. On a very cold night after driving through slush, many drivers leave a car in Park on level ground without setting the parking brake.
